The inspiration for Weave came from Doroudian's own experiences in design and development. While working on a mobile application project, she noticed a disconnect between her vision for the application and the realities of what could be built. This led her to question the existing workflows and collaboration methods between designers and developers. Weave is her solution to these challenges, offering a platform for mutual understanding and co-creation from the very beginning of a project.
Weave's unique properties lie in its ability to facilitate collaboration and mutual understanding between designers and developers. It allows both parties to learn about each other's logic and approach, propose changes together, document their entire process on a contextual level, and develop mutual trust. This is achieved through the co-creation of system architecture, a process that begins before any design decisions are made.
The design of Weave was heavily influenced by the study of Unified Modeling Language, a language used in software development to map information when designing a system. Doroudian conducted usability testing with a low-fidelity design of an information mapping workflow, involving both designers and developers, to better understand their approaches when mapping information. This research and testing process was crucial in shaping Weave's final design.
Weave is not just a tool, but an invitation to rethink and redefine how tools are developed and used in collaborative processes. It challenges the traditional workflows and encourages a more ethical, transparent, and efficient collaboration process. The plugin can be used within interface prototyping tools by designers, and through its web app by developers. It allows designers to turn user scenarios into system maps of the product, which then become the basis for their collaborations with developers.
In conclusion, Weave represents a significant step forward in the field of design and development collaboration. Its innovative approach to fostering mutual understanding and co-creation has the potential to greatly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of design and development workflows. As Doroudian herself puts it, "Weave is not simply a product, it is an invitation to converse about rethinking and redefining how tools are developed and used in collaborative processes to help humans better handle complexity, ethics, and transparency among each other."
